+ + + DAILY TELEGRAPH, MAY 16 2000 THE LATE SHOW
" The 24-hour city is already a reality for art-lover Lou Reed. Reed was dining with a friend - the Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein - on Sunday night, when he decided he wanted to see Helnwein's new show at the Robert Sandelson Gallery. "I had just taken to my bed when I got a phone call from Gottfried", says Sandelson. "But I'm an old fan of Lou Reed so I went as I was and opened up at midnight." For nearly an hour, Sandelson stood in his nightwear and "yawned away while they analysed the pictures in detail". Afterwards, he drove Reed back to his hotel where, the star explained, he was looking forward to doing tai chi exercises on the balcony at dawn. ..."

" The current issue of Camera Austria consists entirely of blank, black pages, with "Oesterreich 2000" written simply in the top right hand corner of each. Nothing demonstrates more effectively the shock of Austria's artistic community at the electoral success of Joerg Haider and his right wing Freedom Party, but this does not apply to Gottfried Helnwein. To the Austrian artist in self imposed exile, the recent events have come as no surprise at all. "I don't think the situation in Austria has really become any worse," states Helnwein matter of factly, "before the world just didn't want to look at it. I knew about the young Nazis infiltrating the Freedom Party in the mid '70s. ..."

+ + + THE GUARDIAN, MAY 16 2000 The man who used his own blood to paint Hitler
" Kate Connolly meets Gottfried Helnwein, the Austrian who is still confronting his country's Nazi past.

Walking along Cork Street in central London, trying to locate the Robert Sandelson Gallery, I do a double take on seeing Mick Jagger standing at number 5a, gazing through its paneless window. He has the 70s hairstyle, carved cheeks and angular nose, arms folded and face expressionless as he observes the workmen labouring to reinsert the glass. The whole tableau recalls some contrived album cover. Except it isn't Jagger, but one of his biggest fans, Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. ..."

" Kennt Gucci Helnwein? Wie Klone des Wiener Konzept-Künstlers spazierten die Models Sonntag abend in Mailand für das Florentina Mode Haus über den Laufsteg. Besser gesagt, den Spannteppich, auch er ganz im stil der Hippie-Aera, in die Gucci seine Herbstkollektion 2000 verlegt hatte. Mit Helnwein's typischen Kopftuch, seinen Brillen, und seiner Frisur. ..."

Any artist who sites Donald Duck and Jesus Christ as the most important influences in their art must be worth taking a look at. In the row of pristine gallery fronts in London's Cork Street, you cannot miss Gottfried Helnwein's show; it's the one with the gigantic Mickey Mouse staring out at you. The Robert Sandelson Gallery has given us a stunning show of the infamous, Austrian born artist's recent work. The influential combination of the Disney character and the Messiah makes for a very disturbing exhibition. Helnwein is on a mission to find the answers to questions that no-one in Austria would give him; such as why the post-war republic portrayed itself as a victim rather than as one of the first main perpetrators of Nazism.

Foto-Austellung in Bonn: Gottfried Helnwein Faces"
